Grading settings and targets

Boundary series, buffer, tiers, targets and predictions.

Each tracker has a Targets and settings page, reached from the subject. Changes recalculate grades straight away. What you can change depends on your role.

Grading (heads of department and senior leaders)

These change the grades of the whole year group, so they are kept to leaders.

  • Boundary series: which summer’s overall boundaries working-at grades are measured against, from June 2019 onwards.
  • Buffer: how much harder than those boundaries to make the grades, as a percentage of the maximum mark. See How grades are worked out.

Before you save, a preview shows how many students’ grades would go up or down, so a change is never a surprise. Mock grades are not affected: a mock is always graded against the boundaries the board published for that paper, so a student’s mock grade is what the board would have given.

Students (teachers and leaders)

  • Tier: Foundation or Higher, for tiered subjects such as maths.
  • Target: the minimum grade the school expects. Targets can be locked so they don’t drift during the year.
  • Predicted grade: the teacher’s judgement, also editable on the marksheet and the class page.

Uploading targets

Most schools get targets from FFT or their MIS. Upload a CSV or Excel sheet with a UPN or name column and a Target column; as with marks, you see a preview before anything is saved.
