Licensing and pricing (draft)

What it could cost, what a school saves, and the options: AI, MIS sync and papers.

What a school saves

A leading assessment tracker charges £500 a year for 2 subjects, £2,000 for 5 subjects and from £3,000 for the whole school, before extras. Attainio Core covers up to 5 subjects for £495, and every subject for £995, with no per-teacher seats.

With both options switched on, Core comes to £1,285 a year and Whole school to £1,785, still under what a school pays for 5 subjects or the whole school today. Prices are per school per year, excluding VAT, and the first term of a pilot is free.

The options

The principle: keep the core cheap and complete, so any school can run mocks properly without paying for things it doesn’t want. Anything with a real running cost (AI) or a fee from someone else (Wonde, the exam boards) is a separate option, so schools choose it knowingly.

Core

Up to 5 subjects

£495 a year

Everything a department needs to run mocks properly, for up to 5 subjects. Whole school, every subject: £995 a year. Nothing is sent to an AI service.

  • Past paper library with board links and paper structures
  • Marksheet, paste and spreadsheet import
  • Grading against each paper’s own boundaries
  • Question and topic analysis for every mock
  • Every view: class, subject, year, school, trust
  • Mock reports, progress reports and the family portal
  • Data collections, CSV and Sisra exports
  • Students and classes kept up to date by spreadsheet
  • Unlimited staff and students
  • Email support and an onboarding call

AI option

Add-on

+ £495 a year

Features that need a large language model. Each is optional and a teacher checks every AI result before it is used.

  • Capture marks from photos of marked scripts
  • Draft report comments for each student, for the teacher to edit
  • Plain English summaries of a mock: what the class found hard
  • Ask questions of your data in plain English

MIS sync option

Add-on

+ £295 a year

Students, classes and staff kept in step with SIMS, Arbor, Bromcom and the rest through Wonde, nightly and hourly in the school day.

  • Covers Wonde’s connection fee for the school
  • New students and class changes appear without anyone typing them in
  • Without it, the data manager keeps students and classes up to date by spreadsheet

Full past paper library

Price to be confirmed

Subject to the exam boards

Papers and mark schemes held in the app, ready to print beside the marksheet, including the latest locked series. This needs a licence from each exam board, and the cost depends on the fees they set, which we don’t know yet. It would be charged per subject at cost. Until then, Core links to each paper on the board’s own site, which works today and needs no licence (option A below).

How the paper options work

Exam boards license their papers to schools (“centres”), not to software companies. AQA and Pearson both let a school download, print and copy papers for its own mocks and keep them on a private school intranet for up to five years. Both forbid putting them on a third-party website or platform, and AQA forbids using its material to train AI. That shapes three options.

A. Link to the board (included in Core, works today)

The app stores facts about each paper (question numbers, maximum marks, assessment objectives, topic tags and the grade boundaries) and links to the board’s own download page. Teachers download from the board, using the school’s board login for recent locked papers. No licence is needed from the boards because nothing of theirs is copied. See Past papers.

B. The school’s own copies (possible, needs the boards to confirm)

A school uploads the papers it has downloaded into its own private storage in the app, visible only to its staff, so teachers print from one place beside the marksheet. This is close to the boards’ “private intranet” allowance, but the storage is run by us, a third party, so we would want each board’s written agreement first. If agreed, it would be part of Core.

C. A full library in the app (only with a licence from the boards)

The app holds the papers and mark schemes itself, ready to print, including the latest series. This is the full past paper library option above. It needs a commercial agreement with each board, and its cost would be passed on per subject. It is the most convenient option and the least certain.

AI and the exam boards

Two of the AI features touch exam-board material: photo capture reads students’ answers to board questions, and a future structure tool could read a board’s mark scheme. Reading is not training, but AQA’s rule on AI will make exams officers cautious, so photo capture stays off until the boards’ position is in writing. Whatever the boards say, we would:

  • use AI providers under a data processing agreement that forbids training on school data;
  • send the least data needed, without student names where possible;
  • show every AI result to a teacher to accept or change before it counts;
  • let a school switch each AI feature off.

Open questions

  • Whether the AI option is a flat fee or charged by use, with a fair-use limit on photo capture.
  • What AQA, Pearson, OCR and WJEC Eduqas will agree to for paper options B and C, and for AI processing of scripts.
  • Whether trusts or individual schools are the main buyer.
  • The right price points, once a pilot school has used it for a term.
