Setting up a school

Onboarding step by step: sign-in, staff and roles, trackers, students, targets.

Getting a school going takes about a week of elapsed time and a few hours of anyone's effort. Some steps the school does in the app, some we do together on an onboarding call, and with MIS sync some happen by themselves.

  1. 1

    Agree the pilotWith usA call

Which subjects and year groups, Core or Whole school, and whether to add MIS sync. The first term is free.

  2. 2

Create the school's accountWith usSame day

We set up the school in Attainio with its name and its staff email domain (for example yourschool.org.uk). Each school's data is kept apart from every other school's in the database itself.

  3. 3

Turn on Microsoft or Google sign-inSchool10 minutes

The school's IT administrator approves the Attainio app once in Microsoft Entra (or Google Workspace). No app registration on the school's side and no passwords to manage: staff sign in with their school account. Someone gets in only if their email is on the school's domain and matches a member of staff on the school's list.

  4. 4

Staff and their rolesWith usOn the onboarding call

With MIS sync, staff arrive from the MIS automatically. Without it, the school sends a staff list (name and email) and we load it. On the call we set who leads which subject, which year group and who sees the whole school; see Roles. A screen for the school to do this itself is planned.

  5. 5

    TrackersWith usOn the onboarding call

One tracker per subject and year group (for example Year 11 AQA GCSE English Language), with the grade boundaries to use. A screen for the school to add trackers itself is planned.

  6. 6

    Students and classesSchoolAn hour

With MIS sync this is automatic. Without it, the data manager uploads the roll once in Students and classes: students, their classes and groups (Pupil Premium, SEN, EAL), checked before anything is saved, then kept up to date there.

  7. 7

    TargetsSchoolMinutes per subject

Upload targets from FFT or the MIS for each tracker, or type them in. See Grading settings and targets.

  8. 8

    The first mockSchoolAs planned

A teacher picks a paper, sits and marks it as normal, and enters the marks. Grades, analysis and reports follow straight away. See Setting a mock.

What the school needs to have ready

  • The staff email domain, and the name of whoever administers Microsoft or Google accounts.
  • Without MIS sync: a staff list (name, email) and a student roll (name, year, UPN, classes); an export from the MIS is ideal.
  • Who leads each subject and year group, and the senior leaders.
  • Targets, if the school uses them (FFT or the MIS).
